Parent Teacher info evening ( Technology and children)
Tim Keller took us through the dynamic growth in the internet, its impact on society, developing digital citizenship and how to manage the internet within the home environment. Having highlighted the dangers your children may face, Tim outlined the strategies to parent effectively in this digital age.
Facebook: You need to be 13 years old to be on Facebook. If your child is old enough to be on Facebook insist that you are invited as a friend. They must only ‘friend’ people that they know personally. Ensure that the privacy settings are set to friends only. Make them aware of the dangers of posting dubious photos. Remember www = whole world watching. Check out this social media site as a safe, kid friendly alternative: www.whatswhat.me
Cell Phones: Having a cell phone is an effective way for your child to keep in contact with you but you need to enforce usage boundaries. Cell phones should be handed in to you before your child goes to bed. Mobiflock is a fantastic service that blocks certain websites and allows you to monitor your child’s cellphone usage: www.mobiflock.com
Computers: The computer should be in a central place at home, not in your child’s bedroom. The computer should be locked with a password. The parent would need to allow access. Be curious when they are on the computer. Kidzui can be used as a safe browser for your children: www.kidzui.com
Sleep Overs and Play Dates: Check to see what safety strategies are in place at friend’s houses. This is often where children are exposed to the things you most fear..
Talk to your children about Social Media. Celebrate this fast growing Digital Age and the freedom it gives us but do not shy away from sharing the dangers that it can pose if precautions are not taken.
The evening was very informative. We appreciate Mr Keller coming in to talk to our parents.

Music Extra-murals

A reminder to parents and learners that we expect full attendance at all our choir and ensemble practices. Once your child has joined the choir, they need to stay committed for the whole year. We are finding many children miss practices without excusing themselves (particularly in the FP choir). Parents MUST please write a short note to the teacher concerned to explain why a child cannot attend a practice. The SP Ensemble and Senior choir both have early morning rehearsals on Mondays and Tuesdays respectively - please make sure your child attends these practices and is not late!

Music Exams

All children who learn an instrument during the school day with Mrs Atherton or Miss Blackshaw will be sitting an informal music exam/test during their normal lesson. These exams will take place mostly in week 6 (gr 4 - 7), some in week 7 or 8 (FP children).

Please check your child's music notebook for the exact day and for other information on what to prepare. Make sure your child is practising their instrument regularly - ideally about 4 - 5 times per week for 10 - 30 mins at a time, depending on the age and level of the child.

Grade 1 - 4 Music Concert

This concert is coming up in Week 9 on Wednesday 6 June at 6pm in the school hall. All children in grades 1 - 4 who learn a musical instrument at school will be taking part as well as those children in the FP choir and the FP Ensemble. Please diarise this date now and make sure that your child is available to attend

The General Knowledge Team:

Wi-aam Jassiem, Muneera Banderker, Beth Postings, Juliette Austin, Jennifer Ely and Thomas Attwood participated in the first round of the Inter-Schools’ General Knowledge at Westcott Primary School. Our team achieved 2nd position out of 7 schools

Garden Morning

Another huge thank you must go to the hard-working individuals who spent their Saturday morning in the Kirstenhof garden. Despite the threat of rain we managed to ward it off until 1 o'clock where by that time all the weeding, pruning, relocation of plants and making of beds was completed. We were very lucky to have a whole team of knowledgable and productive gardeneners on board who created a new bed in the Gr 1 playground, weeded the main beds in the entrance, transplanted clivias, strelitzias, various succulents and a variety of other plants, pruned the bouganvillia at the outer KPS sign as well as the lavender and polygala on the entrance path, and generally revived a bit of life back in to some forgotten areas. Kirstenhof extends a heartfelt thank you to: Mr and Mrs Tomalin, Mrs Jenny Pearson, The Simpson family: Ann, Ross and Emily, The Smith family: Brett, Julie, Hannah and Elijah, The Scholtz ladies: Janet and Jess, Heidi Mahon, Murray, Kegan and his mum Tracey Stotesbury. A very kind Mrs Nathan, friend of Ann Simpson, also donated agapanthus as did Mrs Lindy Tomalin who planted a number of plants she had propegated from her garden in Betty's Bay. What a team! Thank you again to all who helped.

Plant donation from Dr Boomslang

A huge thank you to Dr Boomslang Indigenous Nursery and the Manager Bopelo who donated a whole car-load of indigenous and water-wise plants to Kirstenhof. Dr Boomslang Nursery is opposite Swaanswyk on the Retreat station side. They stock a fabulous selection of plants that our local gardens both need and thrive on. Miss McKechnie has, in fact, visited there so many times in the past year that Bopelo felt sorry for her and gave her some plants! Thanks Dr Boomslang for taking care of our local garden and spreading the message that "Green is good"!
